Born in Berati, Albania in 1953, Kujtim Qama drew from his ancient, mountainous city for artistic inspiration. Overlooking the city is a castle, which to the people historically evokes their love of the land. Encouraged by his interest and his peers, Qama passionately dove into art lessons, studying this castle, the churches, temples and ruins.
After graduating from the country's 400 year-old art academy in 1975, Qama began working as a designer in a porcelain and glass factory. He created numerous artworks, which enabled him to become a member of the world-renowned World Craft Europe. Expanding upon his design skills, and certainly influenced by his homeland's architectural and cultural impact, Qama advanced as a designer creating government statues, fountains andmurals for hotels and institutions in Albania. Albania also contracted him to create the leke currency for his country. Unfortunately, Qama's artstudio in Albania was destroyed during the conflict in Yugoslavia. He nowresides and sculpts in New York.
His love and pride for his homeland is evident in his work - reflecting theeternal passion for life in meticulously carved detail. Enduring Albania's hardships has given Qama greater respect and an uplifting spirituality. Lucite acrylic has become a natural medium for the artist to escape into anethereal, loving world.
Qama's awards include work at the Museo del Skenderbout in Kruja andobtaining the Naim Fransheri medallion.
